. hawkstar . thunderclan . leader . male .
hawkstar gulped down the last of his meal, a jet-black raven full of stringy meat. he licked the cold blood from his lips, and looked up, green eyes darting about the clearing. it was about time he got his children some mentors. they had been apprentices for nearly a moon, with no real guidance. they knew the basics of hunting and fighting, but they could learn so much more if they had some teachers. the massive brown tabby rose to his paws, shaking droplets of water from his fur as he did so. snow tended to melt quickly when it landed on him, and then it would end up soaking his fur. the thunderclan leader bounded towards the highrock, and easily launched himself to the top. he didn't scramble for a grip, claw at the slick stone, or miscalculate the distance. it was a perfect jump, and he landed on all fours, as cats were supposed to do. "thunderclan!" he yowled, his deep voice echoing around the snow-covered clearing. "gather here for a clan meeting!"

Flamespirit had been eating in her nest when she heard a familiar calling.
"Thunderclan! Gather here for a clan meeting!"
She padded out of nest, leaving the unfinished fresh-kill alone. "Yes?" She purred, spotting Hawkstar, high and mighty. She loved him, but his kits; she hoped she wouldn't get an apprentice that was related to him. But then again, she needed to prove to Hawkstar she was responsible and caring like a mother. Besides, maybe she can turn one of the kits to her side, or at least learn not to hate Brackentwist so much from them.

At the sound of her father calling the Clan to a meeting, Cherrypaw lifted her head and perked her ears. She had been resting, much like her Clanmates. It was at this time of day, when the sun was high and prey was scarce, that ThunderClan tended to slack off. Most of them were asleep in their dens, some were sharing tongues, and very few were out hunting or patrolling the borders. Cherrypaw had joined the many sleeping cats. The ginger tabby yawned, showing off a row of thorn-sharp, white teeth, before standing and padding out into the camp. She blinked in the pale light, waiting for her green eyes to adjust to the light. Once she did, she spotted Hawkstar standing a top the Highrock, puffing out his chest like a kit showing off. The she-cat smirked, and her gaze turned to Flamespirit. The thought crossed Cherrypaw's mind once more: I could be her daughter. They had the same, fiery orange pelt, same strong yet lithe build. And Cherrypaw had her father's pale green eyes. She was, in fact, often mistaken for Flamespirit's daughter, a comment she didn't always like hearing. The ginger tabby took a seat, about two tail-lengths away from her father's girlfriend. Technically, they were mates, but Cherrypaw preferred the term 'girlfriend'. It suited Flamespirit much better than 'stepmother'. The apprentice dipped her head politely to the she-cat, then grinned and waved her tail in Hawkstar's direction.
Tawnystep stood up, admiring her sorting for a moment. She had fixed up the herbs, restocked the ones that were low, and thrown out the old ones. Her den was well-equipped for the harshness leafbare always brought to her Clan. She turned her sleek head, black ears angled towards the fern tunnel. Hawkstar was calling a meeting. The slim tortie padded through the fern tunnel, between the split rock, and out into the camp clearing. Her feet sunk a good two inches into the snow, and she picked her way carefully towards the Highrock. She sat next to Flamespirit, and licked the warrior's shoulder in greeting. "Hey!" she purred. "I haven't seen you in a while. You should come visit me more often."

Flamespirit dipped her head as the medicine cat approached her, licking her shoulder back. "Hello Tawnystep! Of course I will when something exciting happens and I need help." She purred jokingly, "I'm kidding. Maybe after the meeting we can talk more? We need to catchup one stuff."

A sleek, black followed after the three she-cats, like a shadow slipping across the thick snow. A pair of yellow eyes flashed, and there was Blackbird, taking a seat behind them. He glanced up at Hawkstar, narrowing his eyes in the sunlight, and dipped his head respectfully.
Mousewhisker arrived next, her mousey-brown body standing out against the black and red pelts of her Clanmates. She took a seat beside Blackbird, and waited for the announcements to begin.
Finally, Leafpaw arrived, her brown tabby body slipping up beside her sister, Cherrypaw. She greeted her by touching her nose to her cheek, and gave a smile. "Bet you anything this announcement is for us." she purred, and gave a little laugh. "It's about time we got out mentors."

" yesterday we were just children "
lionkit scrambled after his clanmates, stumbling out of the nursery and into the snow drifts. he had created a tunnel under the snow to travel through, so he didn't have to shove his way through the powdery stuff, but someone had crushed it recently. the cream tabby shuffled through the clumps of snow, slightly disappointed, but eager to hear the announcement. perhaps he would become an apprentice!
" playing soldiers, just pretending "
" you're hot, then you're cold "
otterpaw perked her ears at hawkstar's call, and set down the raven she'd been eating. she had discovered a love for bird meat lately, and now refused to eat anything else. the brown and white feline gulped down the rest of her meal, got to her paws, and hurried to join the meeting.
" you're yes, then you're no "
" and the saddest fear comes creeping in "
brackentwist slipped out of the warrior's den, ruffling her fur to rid herself of the snow that clung to her pelt. her right green eyes scanned the clearing. most of thunderclan had arrived, and as usual, she was on of the last. she spotted her two daughters, leafpaw and cherrypaw, and headed towards them. she greeted each by licking their ears, and took a seat behind them.
" that you never loved me "
" we don't even have to try "
flowerpaw scurried after her siblings, tripped over a couple tails, and stumbled up beside her mother. "hey, guys!" she purred, and waved her tail cheerfully before giving a little bounce on her paws. "i bet leafpaw is right. don't you think cherrypaw? 'bout time we got some mentors."
" it's always a good time "

. coldpaw . thunderclan . apprentice . male .
it was just like coldpaw to be late for a meeting. he practically flew from his nest, barrelled out of the apprentice's den, and ran to the gathering of cats. he meowed a quick hello to his siblings, then spotted otterpaw a little ways off. he headed towards her and took a seat, sending her a smile.
. white with silvery stripes . soft blue eyes .
. hawkstar . thunderclan . leader . male .
hawkstar laid eyes on flamespirit, and felt a purr rumble in his throat. he was pleased that she got along so well with tawnystep. the two seemed like good friends. the tom's pale green gaze turned to his kits as they scampered out of the den, chattering like the apprentices they were. they would definitely be excited for this announcement. "thunderclan!" he began, stepping forward to signal that the meeting had now begun. "first, i must warn you all. a fox has recently been spotted in our territory, and i ask that you all keep an eye out. kits are not to leave camp, and apprentices are not to leave without an escort. until the fox is killed or chase off, i want you all to be extra careful." he glanced meaningfully at his clanmates, hoping to express that the situation was in fact serious. "on another note, about a moon ago, i gave four young kits their apprentice names. i did not, however, give them mentors. coldpaw, cherrypaw, leafpaw, and flowerpaw, you have waited long enough for this day." hawkstar felt a smile curl up the corners of his mouth, and he began with flowerpaw. "flamespirit. you are a strong and independent warrior, and i believe that you will be able to handle flowerpaw. flowerpaw, flamespirit will be your mentor until the day you receive your warrior name." the brown tabby gave his youngest daughter a nod. "brackentwist, you are kind and compassionate, and i believe you will make a fine mentor for leafpaw. leafpaw, brackentwist will be your mentor until the day you receive your warrior name." "blackbird. you are a brave and independent warrior, and i believe you will get along well with cherrypaw. cherrypaw, blackbird will be your mentor until the day you receive your warrior name." and finally, the eldest. his only son, coldpaw. "mousewhisker. you are a strong and intelligent warrior. i believe you will teach coldpaw everything you know. coldpaw, mousewhisker will be your mentor until you receive your warrior name."

Flamespirit almost snorted, but stopped herself. She finally got an apprentice, but it turned out to be her mate's ex-kit. Flowerpaw, the youngest. The youngest always were the closer to their mothers. This wouldn't be easy. She snapped her head to her new apprentice and smiled. This wasn't a fake smile, but it was a real smile. A genuine smile. She was going to spoil this little flower. She was her first anyway, Hawkstar's kit or not. She padded up to Flowerpaw, purring, "It's an honor to be your mentor, Flowerpaw. There will be fun times ahead." She leaned in, ready to touch noses with her new apprentice.

Cherrypaw's needle-sharp claws slid into the ground, and a gasp escaped her throat before she could hold it back. The ginger tabby snapped her mouth shut, and felt the fur along her spine prickle. Boy, she was making a good first impression. Blackbird! She would have Blackbird as her mentor! The Clan deputy, the one who would be leader when her father died. Not that she wanted to think about that, of course. Cherrypaw yanked herself back into the present. She didn't take time to consider the fox, or what the new restrictions meant for her. No going out alone. It was her and her father who had discovered the fox, wandering about Sunningrocks. Well, she didn't need to worry about that. Cherrypaw lifted her head and held her front paws above the ground, searching for the cat who had been named her mentor. What did he look like again? Oh yes. Thin, sleek pelt, black fur, yellow eyes. Half the size of her father. He wasn't that hard to recognize.

Blackbird swivelled his ears forward, listening intently to the announcement. He took into account the fox, and made a mental note to organize a patrol to chase it out or kill it. Then the mentors were named, and he was one of them. Cherrypaw would be his apprentice. The snarky little she-cat whose father believed she could do no wrong. Blackbird pulled himself together, and rose to his paws. He slipped through the crowd of cats, and came to a halt in front of the ginger tabby. "Cherrypaw." he mewed, dipping his head slightly. "I'm looking forward to training with you." With that, he bent down to touch his nose to her shoulder.
Coldpaw. Coldpaw, her nephew. The boastful one. Yes, she could handle that. Mousewhisker dipped her head respectfully to her brother, gave him a teasing smile, and then began to search for the tom who had been named her apprentice. He was white, if she remembered correctly, with silvery stripes that flashed in the sunlight. He was handsome, and it wasn't unusual to hear the she-cat apprentices chatting about him.
Leafpaw sat with her mouth agape. Out of all the ThunderClanners here, her mentor had to be Brackentwist. Her mother. Honestly, Cherrypaw had the deputy! Why couldn't she have something just as special? Leafpaw wasn't even certain she was permitted to have someone related to her as a mentor. But, Hawkstar had announced it, and she didn't really have a choice. The young she-cat sighed, snapped her mouth shut, and tried to compose herself. She still had to look presentable, even if it was just her mother. She took a deep breath, and began searching for the tabby queen.

" yesterday we were just children "
lionkit flattened his ears. so, he wouldn't be an apprentice, but he would in about a moon. besides, it was fun to hear that other cats were moving up in the rankings. the young kit tried to forget his disappointment, and began looking for coldpaw. after a moment, he spotted the white tom, and headed towards him. "hey, coldpaw!" lionkit called, trying to get the apprentice's attention. he reared up on his hind paws, and aimed to swat his shoulder lightly with a paw.
" playing soldiers, just pretending "
" you're hot, then you're cold "
otterpaw narrowed her eyes at the mention of a fox. she and tawnystep would have to gather more herbs in case someone was attacked. lots and lots of cobwebs. after the announcement, otterpaw looked around for the apprentices with the newly named mentors. all hawkstar's kits, if she wasn't mistaken. she spotted the group, and headed towards them. "congratulations, everyone!" she purred, nodding to each of them.
" you're yes, then you're no "
" and the saddest fear comes creeping in "
brackentwist felt a smile curl up the corners of her mouth. yes, she was pleased to have her daughter as her apprentice. she could teach leafpaw everything she'd always wanted to teach, and the young she-cat would grow up to be the cat brackentwist wanted her to be. the brown tabby stood, and turned to face the younger she-cat. she smiled, and bent to touch her daughter's nose. "i look forward to training with you." she purred.
" that you never loved me "
" we don't even have to try "
flamespirit. flamespirit would be her mentor. flowerpaw sucked in a deep breath, closed her eyes, and forced her heart rate to slow down. she would be fine. flamespirit wouldn't treat her any differently, but cherrypaw might. her older sister could be so judgemental sometimes. flowerpaw perked her ears at the sound of flamespirit's voice, and turned to face her new mentor. "oh! um, thank you." she stammered, and lifted off her front paws to touch noses with the ginger tabby. fun times. she liked the sound of that.
" it's always a good time "

coldpaw felt a swell of pride as his mentor was named. he knew mousewhisker had been one of the best apprentices when she was his age, and he was already eager to start training. he stood to go find her, but was stopped by the feeling of someone's paw on his shoulder. he glanced down, and spotted lionkit, trying to get his attention. "yeah? you want to ask me something?" he gave the kit an encouraging smile, then spotted mousewhisker looking around for him. he gave the she-cat a wave with his tail, indicating where he was.

After a moment of searching, Mousewhisker spotted her new apprentice among the gathered cats. She headed towards him with agile steps, and gave the youngster a nod. "I wish you luck in your training." she purred, and bent to touch noses with the tom.

Cherrypaw's light green eyes spotted the ThunderClan deputy, who also seemed to be looking for her. She slipped through the crowd, halting quickly so they wouldn't run into each other. "Me too." she purred, and reached to touch his nose. She stepped back, looking around at her siblings. "Congrats, everyone!"

" yesterday we were just children "
lionkit grinned, happy that coldpaw was paying attention to him and not completely ignoring him. he flicked his tail cheerfully. "congratulations! some day, i'm gonna be just like you. hey, maybe you'll be my mentor!" the kitten's eyes sparked at the thought.
