welcome "few are welcome here, in our world of secrets and darkness. we are a clan of cunning and cleverness, a clan well suited to the shadows of the cold north wind. no other clan can walk the paths of night like we do. other clans may be faster or stronger, but we are the most dangerous warriors: fierce, proud, and independent. we are ruthlessly willing to do what it takes to protect our great clan. there won't be any softhearted alliances here! shadowClan will always be the dark heart of the forest." — blackstar
"shadowclan resides in a pine forest, with trees older than the oldest of our clan. their roots run deep, holding the trees firmly in the soil. when winter comes, we are the only clan who gets any shelter from the cold. however, we also have the least amount of prey. you won't find many squirrels or mice here during greenleaf, and when leaf-bare comes, they all take cover in thunderclan. usually we end up eating snakes, frogs, and lizards. when things are desperate, we scavenge the twoleg dump for food. others may think it's disgusting, but it's how we survive. shadowclan is full of survivors." — ebonystar
territory shadowclan lives in a pine forest, full of huge, ancient trees whose roots run deep in the soul beneath. a bed of pine needles covers the forest floor, softening the cat's pawsteps so they can move around without making noise. their paws are tough, accustomed to needles pricking their paw pads. the forest is natural and the trees are close together, unlike tallpines in thunderclan territory. shadowclan has only a few land marks, and the rest of their territory is covered in pines. located in one corner of the territory is the burnt sycamore, a huge tree that towers above the others, struck by lightening many generations ago. the tree is blackened, probably hollow inside, and used to teach apprentices to climb and hunt. on the opposite side of their territory, a fenced-in area lies next to a thunderpath. it's a twoleg dump, used by shadowclan during leafbare to find food when prey is scarce. they have to be careful not to take anything that might cause disease. beneath the thunderpath between shadowclan and thunderclan, a tunnel serves as a safe means of traveling between territories. they use this at gatherings, and the apprentices sometimes play around it.
borders shadowclan shares borders with thunderclan, windclan, and the moonstone. a thunderpath cuts between thunderclan and shadowclan, with the tunnel beneath providing the only safe way across. the path turns farther down, running across windclan territory. the moor gives way to an old quarry, which runs along the thunderpath until it turns again and marks the edge of clan territory.
camp shadowclan's camp is located at the centre of their territory, surround by thorn bushes growing in a natural circle several tree-lengths across. the only entrance is a small, sand-covered path leading into the camp. the clearing has next to no grass, and is covered in a layer of dry mud. near the back of the clearing, a huge rock juts out of the soil, at least four tail-lengths high. this is where the leader makes her announcements. propped against this is another rock, this one flat and smooth, creating a den beneath for the medicine cat. ferns surround the den, allowing room for sick and injured cats. the nursery is located close to the medicine cat's den, at the back of the camp. the ground dips slightly, a few mouse-lengths below the ground at its lowest point. a thick thorn bush covers it, providing a safe place for the queens and kits. near the front of the camp, a huge thorn bush covers a good three fox-lengths of land, forming the warrior's den. the inside is lined with moss and the ground is covered in feathers, leaves, and brambles. next to that is the apprentices den, a cave with about enough room for ten youngsters to sleep. near the centre of the clear, an ancient oak stretches to touch the sky. its roots are thick, poking up here and there around the camp, especially at the base of the tree. its branches stretch to the edges of the clearing, providing a canopy of leaves during all seasons but leafbare. the roots at the bottom form a small, cozy den where the leader sleeps. between the nursery and the apprentice's den, the warriors have woven a cave-like hollow from brambles, thorns, moss, and leaves, creating a comfy den with room for about seven. this is where the elders sleep. the walls keep them cool during greenleaf, and warm during leafbare.
