Tawnystep closed her eyes, breathing in the cool air and shuddering as it filled her lungs. She breathed out, and a puff of steam rose above her head, away from her small, coal-black nose. She opened her eyes. Two olive-green circles, a faint spark of life hidden within. Once, that light shone brighter than the stars, but these days, it was beginning to fade. Sighing, the tortie made her way through the camp. Few cats were out. A couple apprentices tossing snow at each other, and two or three warriors sharing tongues. No one wanted to be out on such a cold day, but at least half the camp was probably out hunting. Oh, how Tawnystep longed to be with them, facing the chill, finding prey for her Clan. She wanted to feel the warm fur of her Clanmates pressed up against her, racing through the forest, the wind in her face. But that life was gone, and she was stuck in the camp more often than what pleased her. She still got out every now and then. Reaching the edge of camp, she took a seat, and scanned the almost-empty clearing. "Anyone want to come gather herbs?" Tawnystep squinted her yellowish eyes as a sudden gust of wind hit her in the face. She didn't like going out alone, especially when it was this cold.

" yesterday we were just children "
lionkit was probably one of the few cats who enjoyed the snow. he could play in it for every, tossing up clouds of powdery white and burying himself a tail-length under. he would shove his nose into it, then come up snorting and giggling, then do it all over again. he bounded across the white sheen like a rabbit, breaking the smooth surface and sending up flakes as he bounded around the nursery. his fur stuck out in every direction, so that he resembled a hedgehog more than a cat. at the sound of tawnystep's voice, he paused and perked his ears. he he glanced towards her, a shiver racking his body now that he stood still. if he stopped moving, he got cold in a matter of seconds. there, on the other edge of camp, he spotted the chocolate tortie, majestic against the sparkling snow. excitement flowing through him, he burst into a run and called, "i wanna come! can i come, tawnyst--" before he could finish, is foot caught on something hidden under the snow. his momentum carried him forward, and he flew through the air. wind whipped against his side, plastering his fur to his skin, and then he landed with a muffled thump a good two tail-lengths from where tawnystep stood. lionkit flipped sideways and onto his paws, then scrambled towards her. once he had reached her, he sat back on his rump and stuck out his tongue, panting like a dog. "can i come?" he asked eagerly.

No one turned their heads as Tawnystep called out. No one seemed to be interested. Well, except for that flying ball of snow... Frowning, Tawnystep turned her head to see a flurry of snow barreling towards her, and a tiny voice calling from within it. A cream-colored ball of fur flew through the air, and fell a good two tail-lengths from her in the snow. Tawnystep's eyes widened, and she gasped, taking a step back. That was something you didn't see every day. The young tom hopped to his paws and trotted towards her, asking excitedly if he could come. The medicine cat looked him over carefully, and came to the conclusion that he was no older than three moons. Too young to be an apprentice, and therefor wouldn't be needed to do chores around camp. The thought crossed her mind that she may not be able to handle him, but looking into those eager, pale green eyes, she couldn't help herself. "Sure, you can." she purred, reaching out a paw to ruffle the fur between his ears. Then, she bent low and whispered in a confidential way, "Shall we see if anyone else wants to come, or will it just be you and I on our little excursion?"

lionkit bent his head, which was considerably large, and perked his ears as tawnystep whispered to him. he widened his pale green eyes, a grin spreading from ear to ear. he liked secrets, and he liked excursions. well, if an excursion meant adventure, then he liked it. frowning, he decided to find out. "tawnystep?" he whispered in the same, confidential manner. "what's an excursion?" he stared at her wide-eyed, then stopped and shook his head. no time for that. he wanted to get going, and not dawdle around learning definitions of words that weren't in his vocabulary. "nevermind. um..." the tabby glanced around camp, squinting, as if that might help him see better. the two chatting warriors had returned to their den, and the scuffling apprentices didn't seem to be paying much attention. "i don't think anyone else is coming." he said matter-of-factly, and turned to face tawnystep with a confirming nod.

Tawnystep felt a purr rumble in her throat at the kitten's question. She opened her mouth to respond, but snapped it shut when he changed his mind. She smiled, and sat back to let him look around. He seemed eager enough to come with her, and easy enough to take care of. Shouldn't be too hard if he came along, right? The tortie perked her ears, realizing Lionkit had addressed her. It took a moment for her mind to register what he'd said, but once it had, she gave him a quick nod. "Alright. Let's get going then, shall we?" She smiled, and headed for the camp entrance. Her thin body fir easily through the gorse tunnel, and her legs carried her quickly up the ravine. She paused, allowing Lionkit to catch up as she debated where to go. "While, I need some more marigold." she murmured, half to herself, half to Lionkit, "And Otterpaw said we were out of juniper berries." Tawnystep turned her full attention to Lionkit, and explained the plan. "Alright, let's head to the Great Sycamore first. I know some juniper bushes that grow around their. We can go to the river, after that, and find some marigold. Does that sound good?"

lionkit bounded after the tortoiseshell, eyes wide with excitement. as he padded through the gorse tunnel, he looked up in awe. the top of it was nearly a tail-length above his head. goodness, some warriors must be big, if they needed that much room! he glanced down at the sandy earth, which had been protected from the snow. generations of paws had flattened the sand, and he could smell every single one of his clanmates. lionkit scampered after tawnystep, panting slightly as he pulled himself up over the edge of the ravine. he looked around, wide-eyed, although he was still listening to tawnystep ramble of the herbs she needed. this place was huge! trees were everywhere, dotting the snow like spots on a cat. their bare branches reached towards the sky, cutting through the gray. mounds of snow covered the ground, a good three tail-lengths in some places. how on earth did tawnystep plan to get through all this? he turned to her as she finished off, and nodded his agreement. "one problem." he said quickly, and tilted his head. "how do we get to the great sycamore?"

Tawnystep smiled, pleased to see that Lionkit was physically able to keep up with her. He would tire quickly, though, and then they'd have to return. All the more reason to be as quick as possible and get as many herbs as they could before he lost his energy. "It's not far." she said with a laugh, then flicked her tail to the left. "Only a little ways behind the camp. Come on, let's go." She set off at a leisurely stroll, checking back every now and then to make sure Lionkit was following. Tawnystep's long legs easily avoided roots and rocks, and her slim body fit through brambles and ferns, but with Lionkit's stubby legs and kit fur, he might have a harder time. As they went, she explained what they were looking for. "Juniper berries are little, round berries, blue on the outside. They grow in clusters of two or three, on bushes with pale green leaves. There should be some around the edges of the Great Sycamore, and I can fold a couple leaves so we can carry them. Does that make sense?"

lionkit nodded in response. "yeah, i got it." a second later, he pushed through a cluster of ferns, and for the first time, laid eyes on the great sycamore. for a minute, he gazed at it in awe. the sycamore's thick branch stretched towards the sky, like black stripes on a thick gray pelt. he spotted a few brittle leaves still clinging to the bottom branches, and a squirrel near the top rushed into its hole as it saw the two cats approaching. lionkit's eyes traveled down to the base of the tree, and saw that it was as tawnystep had said: pale green bushes, weighed down by snow. "i'll put them in a little pile." he said, and bounded towards the bushes. "i dunno how to make leaf thingies, so i guess you can do that."
