" yesterday we were just children "
the camp was so quiet these days. silence pressed down on it like a huge, flat rock, suffocating those below it. the air stood still, and the sky above had turned slate-gray at least two moons ago. the sun never came out anymore. everything just looked dark and gloomy. except for the snow, of course. a movement could be seen from the nursery, and a small, cream tabby head poked itself out from the bramble bush. two lantern-like eyes peered around the camp, frowning in dismay when they saw that no one was there. a body followed the head, and at this point you would see that the head was actually quite large compared to the body. lionkit only hoped that he'd grow into it someday. sighing, he waddled out into the snow, shoving his round body through a couple drifts before plunking himself down on a hardened circle of ice. he scuffed it with a paw, then ran his tail over the tiny grooves he'd made in the surface. leafbare was no fun when the other kits wanted to stay in the nursery. often times he was the only one who ever showed his face, and he was much more playful than the other kits. bit what good was playfulness when you had no one to play with?

hawkstar spotted the little kit as soon as he'd shown his tiny, cream tabby head. thunderclan's leader lay resting in his den, his head between his paws, just outside the curtain of lichen that hung over the entrance. he watched with curious eyes as lionkit shoved his way through the snow drifts, almost to the middle of camp. he seemed sad and dejected, but hawkstar didn't know why. why wasn't he in the nursery, playing with the other kits? perhaps a queen would come to retrieve him. but after about five minutes, hawkstar decided that no one was coming. his old curiosity got the better of him, and he heaved himself to his paws, puffing slightly so his breath rose into the air. he headed towards the tiny kit, tabby ears perked forward. "what's up with you?" he asked, a friendly purr rumbling in his throat as he took a seat next to lionkit. "you look sad. something wrong?"

Cherrypaw lifted her head from her dark ginger paws, her pale green eyes flicking to the lone kit in the middle of camp. She had heard him dragging his feet through the snow, but hadn't taken interest until he sat down. Generally kits had some purpose to what they did, even when playing games. They didn't sit in the middle of camp for no reason. He didn't look like he was playing a game, in fact, he looked a little lonely. Cursing herself for being so soft-hearted, Cherrypaw grunted as she pushed herself to her paws. She lifted a paw to move forward, but stopped when she saw a familiar brown tabby treading through the snow towards the young kit. she watched her father sit down and say something to the kit, but she was too far away to hear anything, and the snow absorbed a lot of sound. The tabby hesitated, debating whether or not to join the two toms. Well, sitting around doing nothing was kind of boring. It wouldn't hurt to talk to them, she guessed. Cherrypaw sighed softly, and padded towards the two. She flicked her tail in greeting to Lionkit, and nodded politely to her father before touching his cheek with her nose. "Mind if I join you?" she asked, smiling down at Lionkit.

" yesterday we were just children "
for a good five minutes, lionkit sat by himself, shivering in the middle of camp. he ran his tail back and forth over the mark he'd made in the ice. the movement had no purpose, but he had to do something. the tabby let out a sigh, but the small noise was cut short by the sound of a deep, rumbling voice. "what's up with you?" lionkit looked up, and his eyes met those of hawkstar, the thunderclan leader. the tiny kit looked up at him, eyes widening in awe. the massive tabby was at least three times as big as him, possible four. for a minute, lionkit just stared at him, his tongue stuck to the roof of his mouth. "you look sad. something wrong?" lionkit opened his mouth to reply, cursing himself for being stupid enough not to answer. before he could, another voice broke the silence, and he snapped his mouth shut. "mind if i join you?" lionkit glanced to the side and spotted cherrypaw taking a seat. he looked between her and her father, noticing how little they resembled each other. they had the same round, pale green eyes, but the similarities stopped their. cherrypaw had a fiery red tabby pelt, while her father was chocolatey brown with black stripes lacing across his flank. "hi." lionkit squeaked, cringing at how small his voice was compared to there's. clearing his throat, he tried again. "um, hello." now, what were their questions again? oh yes. the tabby shrugged, and shuffled his paws. "no one else likes leafbare." he said plainly, turning to face hawkstar. "all the other kits complain about how cold it is, and everyone is always out hunting. no one ever wants to play with me."

hawkstar perked his ears at the sound of pawsteps, and turned to see his daughter, cherrypaw, making her way through the snow. he smiled, and felt a purr rise in his throat as she touched his cheek. he returned the gesture with a quick lick between the ears, then turned to lionkit. he narrowed his eyes and pressed his lips into a tight line, listening with interest. he didn't get much time to spend with the kits, but certainly wouldn't do him any harm to get to know the youngest members of his clan. according to this little fellow, leafbare was quite boring. this sounded intriguing, because just the other day, hawkstar had seen lionkit bounding around in the snow all by himself, before heading out with tawnystep. "well, perhaps i can give your friends a good talking to." he rumbled, half jokingly. "maybe they'll come out with a few encouraging words." he gave the young kit a smile, then added, "you know, i wouldn't mind playing a game or two. how about mossball? or maybe hide-and-seek?"

blockquote] Cherrypaw settled herself down, curled her tail tightly around her paws, and let her pale green eyes rest on Lionkit as he spoke. Oh, what she wouldn't give to be a kit again. The picture of innocence, able to get away with just about anything. She had been able to blame her faults on the other kits in the nursery, and everyone had believed her. Yes, those were the days. Cherrypaw blinked, and glanced at her father in surprise. He wanted to play? This was something she hadn't seen in him since she was a kit. That playful glint in his eye, the way his ears perked eagerly. He was like a kit himself! Cherrypaw wasn't about to make a fool of herself just so one kit good be happy. "Um...maybe I'll watch." she murmured, and shuffled her paws. "I can be the ref or something."

lionkit's eyes brightened immediately at the idea. he jumped to his paws, soft kitten-fur fluffed out against the cold winter wind. he nodded vigorously before saying, "yeah, that'd be fun! i do like hide-and-seek, but i guess we can't play with only two." he shrugged, and gave cherrypaw a look that edged on reproach. "but we can play mossball! i'll go get some stuff from my nest." with that, lionkit scurried off to the nursery. a moment later, he popped back out, a clump of moss hanging from his tiny jaws. "one second." he mumbled, and began packing the moss into a neat, round ball. once he was done, he took it back in his jaws and backed up a few paces. "catch!" his voice came out garbled, unable to move his tongue due to the lump of moss in his mouth. with that, he flung his head back and released the mossball. it flew in a high arc above his head, across his body, and straight towards hawkstar. he'd been practicing lately.

hawkstar's pale green eyes followed the little kitten into the nursery, before turning to face cherrypaw. "you can join in, if you want." he purred quietly, trying to seem understanding. truth was, he didn't know why she didn't like playing games, but he had to assume there was a good reason. he just didn't know it. lionkit scampered back out of the nursery, and hawkstar got to his paws. "alright, let's play." he chuckled, and bent into a playful crouch. the kit had good aim, for one so young. the mossball flew in a beautiful arch, high into the air, dropping towards hawkstar. he turned to the side and flicked his tail, sending it back into the air and towards lionkit.
